Before we begin to dissect the three essential parts of an effective skincare routine, let me start with this.
Having a commitment to anything is wonderful. Having a commitment to yourself is the most important kind of promise you can keep. Being consciously committed is a vital part of creating a habit. Once you have made the pledge to try something new, the hardest part is staying consistent; but this is where the magic happens. At the same time, you must be patient with yourself while implementing a new routine. Be grateful and learn to love each step of the process.
If you have commitment, consistency and patience, you have the key to achieving the clear, beautiful skin you have been dreaming of.
Now that we have set the stage for success, let’s get technical.
Your skin takes 28 days to rejuvenate. Along with finding the correct skincare for your skin type, you need to make sure you are listening to your skin, looking at your reflection and identifying what it is trying to tell you on a day to day basis. By noticing how your skin reacts to different stimuli – such as products, processes, diet and activity – you can personalise your skincare routine to suit your needs.
First up, you must understand your skin; dry, oily, normal, combination, mature. Once you have identified your skin type you need to choose the correct products to support you.
What we put on our skin really does matter
Once we understand we can choose the correct products so we can actually carry out these three easy steps.
The two most important areas of your skin routine is cleaning and hydrating.
- Cleanser; choose the correct cleanser to support your skin
Milky cleansers will suit most skin types – so they are a good place to start if you are unsure or concerned about aggravating any problems. Other types include oil cleansers and gel cleansers.
Before you cleanse your skin, remove ALL of your makeup. Your makeup doesn’t need to be cleansed, your skin does. If you wash your face every day but find makeup is still stuck in your pores afterwards, or rubs off on your pillowcase at night – you aren’t removing your makeup well enough.
Cleansing in the morning and at night is essential to creating healthy, clear skin. It removes pollutants, dirt, excess oil and gets your face prepared for all the nourishment to follow.
The Gentle Creme Cleanser by Briese Botanicals is a gentle, detergent free cleansing milk – suitable for all skin types.
- Hydration – support your skin by nourishing it with hydration it deserves
If we had to choose one step and call it the most important – it would hydration. The two most common types of moisturisers are;
OILS – strengthen and repair the skin while calming and soothing redness and irritation.
CREAMS – light weight and non-greasy moisturisers create a barrier that protects your face from external factors, allowing your skin to rejuvenate and hydrate throughout the day.
Using an oil at night and cream during the day is the best way to support all skin types. If you have oily skin, do not be afraid of oil. Embrace it! Oils will help to rebalance the pH levels in your skin and stop the overproduction of sebum. If you have extremely dry skin, you can even try applying an oil, followed by a cream on top.
When you think of masks – think HYDRATING, CLEANSING & DETOXIFYING all in one.
The use of clay as a topical treatment dates back hundreds of years. Even back before the huge influx of modern toxins and pollution, people knew that it was important to purge their skin of all the dirt and grime it faced on a day to day basis.
Using a clay mask on a weekly basis draws out the toxicity from within the body and the surface of the skin. Various therapeutic clays can effectively bind to heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, lead and benzene as well as other environmental pollutants and eliminate them from the body’s tissues.
I also advocate for face masks because they give you 20 minutes of self-love time to relax and clear your mind, while clearing your skin.
