I remember the first time I heard about TOM Organics, I was siting on the train heading into the city, reading the interview of Aimee Marks in the COLLECTIVE magazine.
So this is when I decided I would research a little more into what tampons were actually made of and the side effects, how they are manufactured and where I could get myself some of the natural ones right away.
Im not sure whether I was more shocked at myself for not realising sooner or that so many females were unaware and just trusting that we are being taken care of when we make purchases.
I already knew that cotton was the most heavily sprayed crop in the world and I had heard of people developing toxic shock syndrome but I had never really put two and two together til this moment.
Cotton is heavily sprayed with toxic pesticides and chemicals, so yes that means the cotton your tampons are made from that you are putting in that private sensitive, highly absorbent areas are absolutely covered in them!
The non organic tampons/products that you are more than likely currently using can leach chemicals such as dioxins, pesticides and herbicide residues, artificial fragrances and dyes into your beautiful bodies.
Did you know hat on average a woman uses approx 12,000 tampons in her life!
Imagine if you used 12,000 pesticide-laden tampons, releasing toxicity into your body? Now that is what I call a toxic chemical sh*t storm right there.
So if you are conscious about healthy living, what you are nourishing your body from a food point and how you move your body for physical health… why wouldn’t you care about this too.
So whats actually in your tampon?
Here is the nice little recipe of bleached and synthetic ingredients!
- Chlorine Bleach – this is what gives your tampon that bright white colour!
- Diruon – been known to cause birth defects and is a known carcinogenic.
- Polypropylene – a plastic!!!! Commonly used in foam. This is what is used to hold the cotton fibres together.
- Viscose Rayon – This is what will lead to TSS (toxic shock syndrome) fibres can break off when in there. Its used to increase absorbency.
So why did I swap to TOMS
After reading that above Im not sure how you wouldn’t already have 1 foot out the door already.
TOM products are made using the purest organic cotton on earth. They are certified organic. Breathable, comfortable and hypoallergenic, all products are free from chemicals, bleaches and genetically modified material, making them better for your body and better for the earth also. TOMs Organic cotton tampons don’t need binders such as polypropylene to be held together because the organic cotton is naturally interwoven and strong.
Where can you get them right away?
There is no excuse for not being able to make the switch as they are so easily available. You can now purchase these in both Coles and Woolies, Online or Pharmacies and Health Food Stores.
